When Mickyís plan to stop the pirates by inciting the crew to mutiny fails, Davy and Peter deny any involvement in the idea and call Micky a "dirty commie." Itís not uncommon for people to desert friends in serious trouble to avoid trouble themselves. Jesusí disciples bailed out on Him after His arrest (arranged by Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve), and Simon Peter, who promised faithfully that he would not deny Christ, did so three times before the night was out (see Matthew 26:14-16, 31-35, 47-58, 69-75 and corresponding passages in the other Gospels). Paul, too, knew how it felt to be deserted by his friends; he wrote to Timothy, "You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes" (II Timothy 1:15). Yet Jesus has promised, "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20; see also Deuteronomy 31:6). So when the rest of the world turns its back on you, turn your eyes to Him; Heíll always be there for you.
