Ben Cartwheel, alias Black Bart, attacks Kate Nesmith purely out of greed. He already owns half of the valley in which the Nesmiths’ ranch is located, but he seems determined to take over Kate’s place and use the oil on her land to fund a campaign to secure statehood for his ranch. If he isn’t shooting at Kate and her daughters as Black Bart, he tries to persuade Kate to sell out to friendly neighbor Ben.

Such extreme greed is largely comical, but there are ruthless people out there who will stop at nothing to get their own way. The Bible states that their downfall is imminent. "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" (I Timothy 6:9-10; see also Luke 12:15).
